Courier is the classic monospaced typewriter face, in which every character, from the narrow i to the wide m, occupies exactly the same width. The thin slab serifs, even strokes and open shapes imitate the output of a mechanical typewriter, and the digits and punctuation are spaced in the same grid. The design goes back to the 1950s IBM typewriter type.
The fixed width makes columns align perfectly, which is why Courier is used for source code, screenplays, tables, terminal output and technical documents. Its light, dry texture also gives text a documentary or old-office tone, but it looks airy and slightly weak in long passages of body text.
